Afternoon in Bern

Painting Girls

Painting with Food
The 2 girls in the lower right bottom of the picture were painting with what looked to be packets of catsup (ketchup) or packets of jelly. Their brushes were actually plastic knives.

This picture was taken on the unfamous side of the famous clock tower which can be seen in the background.
Raining? Or is She Keeping Dry from the Fountains?

Federal Palace of Switzerland

The Federal Palace of Switzerland in which the Swiss Federal Assembly (federal parliament) and the Federal Council are housed.

The building was designed by the architect Hans Auer and its inauguration took place on 1 April 1902.

The two chambers where the National Council and the Council of States meet are separated by the Hall of the Dome. The dome itself has an external height of 64 m, and an internal height of 33 m. The mosaic in the center represents the Federal coat of arms along with the Latin motto Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno (One for all, and all for one), surrounded by the coat of arms of the 22 cantons that existed in 1902. The coat of arms of the Canton of Jura, created in 1979, was placed outside of the mosaic.

The name in German means "house of the federation" or "house of the alliance".

The fountains in front of the Federal Palace were added in August of 2004.

Glad you enjoyed your afternoon in Bern, even if it did rain a bit. I spent a year in Bern once as a student, and we did have considerable rain or at least drizzle during the winter -- but it's a nice town and your tips brought back pleasant memories.

Rich, lovely little page with oustanding photos of Bern. It is one of the few cities in Switzerland I haven't visited yet. Well done.

Looks like you had a rainy day. Shopping here is no problem when wet. All those wonderful arcades to keep one dry. Oh, if I had money to throw around, I'd buy the butterfly outfit! Not that I'd wear it outside the house...
