This small volcanic island looks towards the far larger island of Tidore. Both Ternate and Tidore are famous for their role in the Spice trade of the early 1600s, especially for their supply of Cloves. The people of Ternate are friendly and hospitable and outwardly conservative. It is important to respect local values, especially in regard to modesty and religious regard.
The township of Ternate is a port, situated at the foot of an active volcano. Fishing is the main industry and also provides the main staple for each meal. As with all Indonesian fishing ports, the barbecued fish and accompanying sauces and vegetables are delicious.
We stayed at the Bukit Selangi Hotel, which is a recently renovated 2 Star hotel on the outskirts of town. The rooms are large and comfortable, with good a/c, beautiful views, hot showers and a tasty breakfast.
- Pros:Friendly people, beautiful scenery, tasty food
- In a nutshell:A great place to call in on for a few days.
