Pompeii was really quite spectacular. It was truly amazing at how well the houses, theatres and the frescoes were preserved for these almost 2000 years. It also shows you how daily life was back then, from cooking and baking bread to their baths and their places of worship, better than any other ruins that I've seen. The attention to detail that they put into their homes is also quite remarkable, from the marble kitchen tops to the well preserved frescoes to the hand made tile floorings to the beautiful sculptures that would adorn their homes. To be at Pompeii is to go back millenia.
You can get great views of Mt. Vesuvius on the higher parts of Pompeii. The sight of Vesuvius erupting must have been really terrifying for the inhabitants because it looms large in the distance. |
