"The Man of Steel" gets into the holiday spirit
Fun photo op - if you are in Metropolis, chances are, this is the reason you came. A 15 foot-high, 2-ton "Man of Steel" statue. Follow the "Superman Statue" signs (yes, really) to the County Courthouse. There, in the main square behind the parking lot, you will see him.
When I was there, he was sporting a nifty Santa hat...
Address: Massac County Courthouse, Town Square
Directions: Follow the signs from Hwy 24 - downtown in the main square, you can't miss him
Memorablilia from TV Show
There isn't much in Metropolis that DOESN'T revolve around Superman... The Super Museum houses the personal collection of Jim Hambrick - and is TOTALLY worth the $3 admission fee. The museum has thousands of Superman items - from lunchboxes to toys, to movie and TV props, costumes, comics, photos... Allow 30 minutes to go thru the museum (you are allowed to take photos), and be sure to browse thru the gift shop on your way out.
Open 7 days a week from 9am - 5pm
Admission is $3.00
Children 5 and under - Free
Address: 517 Market Street, Metropolis, IL
Directions: Town Square - just look for the giant Superman Statue. Trust me, you can't miss it!

Sitting pretty atop the kryptonite
The WHOLE reason you came to Metropolis is to seek out the Superman sites, right? Here is a perfect photo op - take a picture with a chunk of Kryptonite! OK, so it's really just a boulder painted green, but it is still kitschy fun. You will probably be able to come up with a more creative pose, but hey - it was COLD that day!
Address: on the southwest corner of Third and Ferry Streets
Directions: On the southwest corner of Third and Ferry Streets.
From an outlook at Harrah's Casino
Easy enough - find the waterfront! Metropolis has many vantage points from which to view the scenic Ohio River. I'm always fascinated by water (I AM from Southern California, after all, and spent 13 years on the banks of the Mississippi River in New Orleans), so I could sit and watch for hours....
The Massac Theatre
I hate to see things like this... A beautiful old-time movie palace, gone to seed. You can tell the building was lovely in its day, as the residual beauty still exists. The interior has been gutted, and the ceiling has mostly fallen in. It will probably be razed at some point.
This from an article found on the internet:
The Massac Theater, a charming art deco design, opened in 1938 with 537 seats, a large size for a town the size of Metropolis. The front and side elevations were laid in buff brick; polychrome cream and blue terra cotta disrupt the front elevation with vertical finial-topped piers to each side of the entrance joined a ribbon of portal windows. A jazzy marquee, still intact, further enhances the exterior. Entrances on each side of a box office lead to a low-ceilinged front lobby which expands into a larger lobby space. The theater has been completely abandoned since the late 1980s, when a radio station using the front section of the building moved out. The theater screened its last film, Superman, in 1978.
Address: 119 W. Fifth Street, Metropolis
Launch into the Ohio River
There is a well-maintained public boat launch just to the side of the Harrah's Casino self-parking lot. Launch will put you smack-dab into the Ohio River.
Directions: Go towards the self-parking lot at Harrah's, but keep to the right - you will see the sign
Welcome to Metropolis
OK, I know it's cheesy, but vacation photos NEED title shots, right?? This one is SO EASY; it's on the left side of the road as you enter the town. You have to pass it anyway, so why not pull over and take a photo? This one was taken with my camera on self-timer mode on the roof of my car...
Directions: On the main road leading to Metropolis, once you've turned off I-24
Nice riverboat casino - and part of the Total Rewards network. Three floors of gaming - my luck was consistant on all three... Buffet was stellar. Probably should have listed this under "tourist traps", but with a casino, I think you know what you are getting into when you walk in the door. That said, I had a fun time, and played for a while before losing my money, and really, that is all I ask for in a casino.
Address: 203 Ferry Street Metropolis, IL 62960
Directions: From Nashville
Take I-24W/I-65N towards Clarksville/Louisville. Merge onto I-24W towards Clarksville. Take Exit 37 - Metropolis/Brookport (US-45). Turn left onto US-45. Turn Left onto Ferry Street.

The historic site is a replica of the 1802 American fort that was on site. The historic fort area contains 2 barracks, 3 block houses, officer's quarters, well, stockade along with a fraise fence. Since the original site is on the National Register of Historical Places, the replica is built to the east of the site. The site has the archaeological outline of the 1757 French Fort. There is also a visitors center/office complex along with an area for the museum.
A very nice park, with picnicking, camping, hiking, boating and hunting opportunities available.
Address: 1308 E. 5th Street, Metropolis, IL
