Paris For my first ever trip outside of the UK I chose Paris. Arrived CDG at 08.15. No taxis at CDG but very helpful person called a taxi for us. Cost was 43 euros, maybe a little expensive but CDG is quite a distance from Paris city centre and being first time abroad - easier.
Saw most of the usual sights one goes to see in Paris.
Spent a lot of time in the Champs Elysee, was very surprised at the beggars though. Had a wonderful meal however and was very impressed with the french waiters who were most courteous and extremely helpful. I think they thought my small contribution to speaking french was quite amusing, but they seem to appreciate it if you try.
Crossing roads in Paris is like playing chicken, even if the green man is lit. Parisian drivers take no prisoners whatsoever, if you're on the road you're a target! So travellers be warned. Travelling in a taxi is an experience, traffic comes from all directions and they squeeze into the smallest of spaces, don't take a taxi if you're a nervous passenger!
After a very long day, finished at the Eiffel Tower after dark. Very, very impressive. The only thing that spoiled it were the tacky hawkers, who I don't think were even french, trying to sell 1 euro light up Eiffel Towers. They were very persistent and we had to be quite rude in the end. Finally left for CDG as even when you got rid of one of these henious people, another turned up clutching his plastic tower and key rings.
In all though I found the french in both restaurants and shops to be charming, friendly and very helpful. |
