* Gelnhausen, population: 22,000 a Kinzig river city that was established on important trade routes and it was once the seat of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I, Barbarossa (1122-1190).
It would be my first choice as a daytrip from Frankfurt, about 40 minutes away by train.
