Island of Maui

Any Trip to Hawaii is a Good Trip

Beach near a popular surfing competition area
About 8 years ago, I said I would never really feel the desire to go to Hawaii. I wanted to go somewhere else that was not a part of the U.S.
I had the opportunity to go to Maui in 1999 on a work related trip that was actually mostly fun. I have gone back 3 times since to the island of Maui.
Maui has some shopping and little nightlife which is fine with me. The only dissapointment for me is that each time I return there are a few more strip malls than I would like to see. It is building each year and hopefully not too much! I just love the feeling of the warm tropical breeze when you deboard the plane and walk through the open air airport terminal. You are are should immediately be on "island time."

The Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is always recommended. Just be sure you pick a clear day to take this trip around the island. It is a slow journey by vehicle on a one-lane, winding road with sheer drop offs! You will see lots of vegetation, waterfalls, beaches, desert area and there is the very small town of Hana along the way.

Trip to the top of the Mountain

The trip to the top of Mt. Haleakala was the most awesome experience for me. I do not care for heights, but it was worth the trip up another long winding road to an elevation of over 10,000 feet. From the top, it felt like you could see the world - you can see another island from there and look down into the crater. Air is thin, so you can get a bit light-headed. There were two dogs there that were just perched on the edge of the cliff like there was nothing below- very relaxed.
I will post those pictures soon as they are from my October trip this year.
