Ieper (or Ypres) was the diamond on the crown of the British during World War I (1914-1918). They had decided that Ieper was not to be conquerered, and so it wasn't. The town was totally destroyed and has been rebuilt after the war: the oldest buildings were erected in the 1920's.

Thanks for a glimpse into much of what we missed in Ieper but sometimes a higher calling takes precedence and you are quite right we were very lucky to have Caro steering our ship that day!
