In Abondance we visited the (almost) renovated abbey church. Because we had tried to visit the abbey already in 2003 (and the renovation had started) and we were not allowed to enter the chuch because of the ongoing works at the time, the desk lady allowed us (exceptionally) to enter the church. A dozen French visitors were lucky en could, together with my wife and I, enter the chuch - behind us the door was locked again. Along the walls on the stairs we remarked dozens of beautiful chastibles, protected by transparent plastic covers. The church is decorated with beautiful ceiling paintings (a.o. paintings of the 4 evangelists). The church walls are decorated with trompe-l'oeils: the 3-dimensional images are in reality flat painted wooden panels. The organ will need to be renovated in a later phase, while at the time of our visit the candelabrums still had to be hung up and the floor polished.
Expected date of re-opening: end of august 2004.
