I have stayed here on two occasions, and it is a great deal for a single room, about average for a double. It is clean, with a helpful staff and could not be in a more convenient spot, directly across the street from The Savoy, at the Waterloo Bridge.
Unique Qualities: I was most surprised by the pleasant service in the pub in the hotel and also the Mask Bar in the lobby. After having drinks the night I arrived I discovered that the bartender had cashed out before I paid. When I pointed it out to him he said he assumed I was staying at the hotel and I could pay him anytime before I checked out. He didn't even ask for my room number. Having never been to London before, and traveling alone, I found it such a welcome, especially in a large hotel.

This hotel is in the process of renovation and if you don't mind staying in the old section, it is a great deal - about $100 a night for a double room. It is clean, a bit old-fashioned in decor - tapestry curtains, etc. - but a perfect neighborhood for shopping and eating, etc. You can walk to the theater district and the British Museum is only a couple of blocks away. For not much more than the Paddington/Bayswater hotels, it is by far worth it for the location. Safe and lively neighborhood, too.

Another addition to the Thistle Hotel chain in London, this one near Russell Square is still being renovated, but offers decent sized rooms, a nice breakfast room, and basement pub with big screen TV for Skysports :).
Unique Qualities: Two blocks from the British Museum, a ten minute walk to Covent Garden and the Theater District, what more could you ask for, at about $100 a night for a double room.
