Temple de la Sagrada Familia: Sagrada Familia
  • Tip Rating:
  • I went to Barcelona to see this church, after being a devotee of Gaudi for years. It is awe-inspiring to stand at the entrance to the Nativity facade and see his masterpiece. It is also fascinating to watch the continuation of the construction going on. You feel like you are part of its creation. Don't miss it!

Temple de la Sagrada Familia: Sagrada, part three
  • Tip Rating:
  • Walking the spiral stairs in the towers of the Nativity facade is a little scary and made me realize that this would never happen in America. Here there would be railings, security cameras, armed guards, and personal injury attorneys camped on the front steps. It was so refreshing to climb these stairs at my own risk! And look, I'm leaning into the belfry! I'm Danger Girl!

Temple de la Sagrada Familia: Sagrada, part four
  • Tip Rating:
  • It never ends! Here's the payoff for climbing up all of those stairs - walking across the connecting bridge and looking up to find this!

Parc Guell: A perfect blend of art and nature
  • Tip Rating:
  • Parc Guell was a project of Gaudi's begun in 1900. His aim was to create a garden city, incorporating nature into his designs, to fulfill the dream of his benefactor, Eusebio Guell. The paths leading up the hill twist and turn, and at times you can't tell if something was built, or exists in its natural form. Gaudi's blending of forms transcends traditional architecture, and reaches its zenith in this park.

Parc Guell: A perfect blend, part two
  • Tip Rating:
  • Stop for a gelato as you wander around the terrace of the park. From the tiled, curving bench you can see all of Barcelona.

Casa Mila, La Pedrera: Casa Mila
  • Tip Rating:
  • Barcelona Casa Mila, La Pedrera
  • Top floor, La Pedrera
  • by vivalasteph
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Casa Mila, or La Pedrera, is Gaudi's most successful building; it is his design in entirety, not an adaptation of an existing structure, and is still functioning as an apartment building today, albeit, one swarming with tourists.

Casa Mila, La Pedrera: Casa Mila, part two
  • Tip Rating:
  • He followed the classic Roman design of the living space centering around a courtyard, to allow maximum light to all rooms, but maintaining his distinct organic style.

    Casa Batlló: Casa Batllo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Gaudi's use of ornamentation and color set him apart from the other Modernista architects of the day. His reinterpretation of the Gothic and Romanesque styles, incorporating contemporary materials from regional sources broke new ground in the art world. He stepped out of the formality of the work of his peers, and looked to nature for his inspiration, mimicking the sensuous lines and bold patterns.

Palau de la Musica Catalunya: Stunning mosaics and acoustics
  • Tip Rating:
  • The tour of this beautiful Modernisme treasure should be required of all visitors. This is probably the loveliest building in the city. The tour includes much information about the history of the building, and the history of the Catalan music scene for the past hundred years. Come back to hear a concert, it is one of the best smaller venues in Europe.
