Borgarnes.

Borgarnes is a small town in west-Iceland 74 km away from Reykjavík through "Hvalfjarðargöngin", The Whale bay tunnel, see my tip under my Iceland-page Hvalfjarðargöng.

Borgarnes has a population of ca 1800 people. It is a small town but has got "everything" so to speak, a lovely swimming pool, schools, hotels, guesthouses, a campsite, church, lots of shops, restaurants and cafés etc.

Borgarnes.

In Borgarnes is The Settlement Center of Iceland with exhibitions and information on the settlement of Iceland and The Saga of Egill (Skallagrímsson). Borgarnes was the home of one of the most known settlers in Iceland, Skalla-Grímur Kveldúlfsson and his son Egill, who was raised at Borg in Mýrar, which is just outside of Borgarnes.

See my tips on Skalla-Grímur Park, where the father of Egill is buried, and another tip on Brákeyjarsund strait, where Skalla-Grímur drowned his bond-maid in the strait by Borgarnes.

I am directly related to Skalla-Grímur Kveldúlfsson:

Borgarnes.

Borgarnes is by the ocean and when driving towards Borgarnes on ring-road 1 you have to drive on a long bridge to cross the bay.

The boundaries of Borgarbyggð, to which Borgarnes belongs since 2006, are by Skarðsheiði in the south, Holtavörðuheiði heath in the north, by Haffjarðará river in the west with Eldborg crater as its outpost. Borgarbyggð is almost 5000 sq.km. and the population of Borgarbyggð is ca 3.700.

It is very nice to have a such a rich memory culture, and I think it could be result and long time independence. I like your stories about your ancestry and I like to explore small towns. Thank you for sharing your travel memories for us!

How great that you can trace your ancestry all the way back to Skalla-Grímur Kveldúlfsson The settlement Centre sounds to be very interesting.
