My country Iceland the land of ice and fire | Goðafoss - waterfall in N-Iceland |
Iceland is the country where I was born and raised. It is an island in the North-Atlantic ocean 103.000 km2 in size, with only ca 318.000 inhabitants, give or take a few, so we have a lot of space, and Reykjavík is our capital, the northernmost capital in the world and that is where I live. In ca 874 Vikings from Norway came to Iceland and settled here. On their way they kidnapped people from Ireland so our heritage is Norwegian and Celtic. Iceland is a volcanic island often called the land of ice and fire. Have a look at my pictures and tips on my country, most of the tip are under Iceland and South-Iceland and I will be adding more with time. If you want to know about the day to day weather in Iceland look up this site weather Have a look at this site for the exchange rate of the ISK króna Íslandsbanki

| I in Benalmadena, Costa del Sol, Spain. |
| | My travels since 1973 I started on VT in October 2007 so my tips and photos are only from and after that time. But before that I travelled widely. My first trip abroad was to Copenhagen in 1973 and I fell in love with that beautiful city, coming from Reykjavík the difference in architecture and size of Copenhagen compared to my home-town just blew me away.
In 1976 I visited Italy for the first time, Ligniano and Venice and fell in love with palm-trees and am still in love with palms :D
In 1977 I visited Tenerife for the first time and have since created a travel page on Tenerife on VT.
In 1978 I visited Gran Canaria, which I have visited many times since then and built a Gran Canaria page here on VT.
In 1979 I visited London for the first time and it was quite a culture shock seeing the big crowds of people, but I fell in love with the city and have visited it so many times since then.
In 1980 I visited Copenhagen again.
In 1981 I spent time in Copenhagen and at a Ungdomshöjskole in Ribe in Jylland in Denmark and furthered my knowledge of Danish, which is obligatory to study in Icelandic schools from an early age.
In 1983 I spent 2 months in Göttingen, Germany at a Göethe Institut studying German.
In 1984 I went to Ibiza, Spain with a big group of fellow students who had just graduated from college.
In 1985 I visited Switzerland and Germany and then spent 3,5 months in Perugia, Italy to study Italian.
In 1986 I spent a month in Rimini, Italy and other places in Italy.
In 1987 I spent 4 months in London (my favourite city) studying Macrobiotics.
In 1988 I visited London again.
And in 1989 I got a ride on a freight-ship carrying salt-cod to Lisboa, Portugal, and spent some time in Porto and Lisboa. This turned out to be my last trip for 14 years when I got was inundated with work and held down 2 jobs and later got too ill to travel.
So when I started travelling again I went wild and went in 2003 to London, which I had been dreaming of for so many years. It was all that I had dreamt of and I was there during the biggest heat-wave in 40 years, it was 38 degrees C - I loved it.
In 2003 I also visited Copenhagen again.
In 2004 I visited London 3 times, Alhaurin el Grande in Spain and Darmstadt in Germany. I also spent 1,5 months in Serbia in 2004.
In 2005 I visited London 3 times and spent 2 months in Serbia and Montenegro.
In 2006 I visited London and Canada
In 2007 I went 7 times abroad and visited London, Canada, Torremolinos, Spain twice and I have a Torremolinos page here on VT. I also went to Barcelona, China, Gran Canaria and Tenerife in 2007.
In 2008 I went to Gran Canaria twice and Torremolinos but that year I travelled around Iceland and went on many camping trips in my country.
2009 - A 6-months'-stay in Torremolinos, Spain at the end of March-September.

| | Þingvellir, Iceland Now, back to Iceland. Þingvellir is our National park and the oldest parliament in the world, established in 930. It's about a 50 minutes' drive from the center of Reykjavík. It is a beautiful place not to be missed when visiting Iceland. The nature is breathtaking and the history is really interesting. Take a look at my Þingvellir travel pages for tips and more pictures Þingvellir National park

| Gullfoss - The Golden waterfall |
| | Iceland-Gullfoss Iceland is a volcanic island with many mountains and a lot of beautiful waterfalls. This waterfall Gullfoss "The Golden waterfall" is Iceland's most famous waterfall. It is located on The Golden Circle-tour which also takes you to Geysir and Þingvellir, see my tip under things to do in Iceland

| Moon-like landscape in North-Iceland. |
| | North-Iceland There is an amazing mud pot area in Mývatn, Hverfjall. You get the feeling of being on the moon. Have a look at it and other amazing places in Iceland under things to do in Iceland
|
| The lagoon at Mývatn, N-Iceland. |
| | Iceland-Mývatn There is another lagoon, similar to the well known Blue lagoon, at Mývatn in N-Iceland. These naturebaths are located only 6 kilometres from Dimmuborgir (Dark fortress) where one can walk along trails through the amazing lava formations, some of it being as high as hills, making it a spectacular walk. Dimmuborgir is in the Mývatn area, about an hour and 15 minutes' drive from the northern capital of Iceland, Akureyri. See my tips on these places under Iceland
|
| Strokkur - eruption - South-Iceland. |
| | Iceland-Geysir This natural phenomenon is only to be seen in Iceland, nowhere else in Europe, so it is well worth a visit. Geysir is claimed to be the biggest in the world, and has given its name to all other hot-springs which are called geysers. Although this geothermal area is named after Geysir then the "geysir" which erupts most frequently (like every 5 minutes), is called Strokkur. Take a look at my Geysir travel-pages Geysir for more pictures and information and under Iceland
|
| Seljalandsfoss waterfall in South-Iceland. |
| | Iceland - Seljalandsfoss Seljalandsfoss - foss=waterfall in Icelandic is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland. It is possible to walk behind the waterfall. It is a must going there when visiting the southern coast of Iceland. See my tip here Iceland
