Laid back Gambia | Fishing boats at Paradise Beach |
I have been to The Gambia on four separate occasions staying in different hotels each time. The main season is between November and March, outside that it can be very hot and humid.
The main resorts are Kololi and Kotu with hotels scattered in other areas such as Bijilo, Bakau, Cape Point and Fajara. The best by far is Kololi and the "Senegambia Strip " because of it's infrastructure of restaurants and bars. At the other resorts taxis will be needed to get to the nightlife.
The Gambia is a poor African country dependant on agriculture and it's tourist industry. The road system around the tourist areas is quite good but once in the country soon comes down to dust track.
The currency is the Dalasi, and when I was there in Feb 07 there were 51 to the Sterling pound, at time of writing I believe it is now 40.
The beaches are good but swimming can be dificult as the water can get choppy. Some of the beaches are private but a good many are public with the sight of fishermen and their boats.. |
