"Small Town of Greenwood, Delaware" Greenwood by YellowRose125
Greenwood Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 3 photos
Greenwood is a small town surrounded by farm country and other small towns. Like many small towns, people often stop there on their way somewhere else. In the past ten years, a new development on the north side of town nearly doubled the population. Residents of Greenwood usually work, shop and play somewhere else! It's a great place to raise kids, tho. In town, there is a nice library, a post office, an elementary school, a few churches, a couple hair stylists, a small grocery store, the former railroad station, a new water tower, a VFW, the town office and police station (which used to be a bank), a funeral home, an Italian restaurant several small manufacturing operations and a bar. On the highway at the east edge of the town is the new fire station, the new bank, the new convenience store/gas station. several restaurants, a day care, a senior center, a Kiwanis BBQ stand, a stone retailer and a car repair shop.
Running through town is the Cart Branch, which leads eventually to a branch of the Nanticoke River. In town, it passes by the grocery store, past a few back yards, and then by the VFW. Most local folks consider this nothing more than a "tax ditch", but years ago kids knew where the deep water holes were and how to cool off in them! This small waterway is home to muskrat, snakes, frogs and minnows. Blue and grey heron are also seen flying overhead. Heading out of town on Route 16 you will cross a branch of the Nanticoke River as you drive east. Although it's also a small waterway, my boys have taken a kayak down it before!
Many people from the D.C. metropolitan area pass through Greenwood on their way to the Atlantic beaches, like Rehoboth Beach, which is about 45 minutes east of Greenwood. As they race through town on the weekends, they may not notice some of the local popular spots. Greenwood locals enjoy Tamburellis (great Calzones and Pizza), and Smith's (family style dining). We stop in at Yoder's Country Store for subs, organic and bulk foods, and enjoy the hardwood floors, and the potbelly wood stove when the weather's cold. Every weekend in the summer, the Kiwani's BBQ stand puts out very popular grilled chicken platters. And the library is a cool place to stop and read a magazine or check your email.
- Pros:Not far from Harrington Raceway, Slots and State Fair, also beaches
- Cons:Known as "Speed Trap" for drivers that don't obey posted speed limits
