Chavín de Huantar Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 18 photos

The oldest advanced civilization in Peru

The temple complex of Chavin de Huantar was build around 900 BC and contains Temples A, B and C, the Circular Plaza, the Old Temple and New Temple.
The Old Temple is a structure of the labyrinthine passageways. It contains stone monuments with relief carvings depicting animals (mostly jaguars).

The Circular Plaza

Chavin de Huantar is located between the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Negra, a half-day bus drive from Huaraz. The area was covered by a landslide in 1945, so the site doesn't look very impressive at first, but it is a UNESCO Heritage Site and well worth visiting.

The Lanzon Gallery

The Lanzon Gallery, located at the very centre of the Old Temple, contains The Lanzon, which was considered a supreme deity of Chavin culture. The figure has a feline head and human body.
