A Destination of Contrasts | Historic Wilmington NC's Picturesque Riverfront |
I've lived in Wilmington & NC's Cape Fear Coast since 1994. I now work at the Wilmington/Cape Fear Coast CVB, and because I love it here, I spend much of my earned 'vacation' time hanging out around Historic Wilmington, and Carolina, Kure, and Wrightsville Beaches. With its barrier island beaches and historic riverfront town, Wilmington & NC’s Cape Fear Coast is a destination of contrasts. In Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Wrightsville Beach, you’ll find well-known attractions such as the Battleship North Carolina, Fort Fisher, Airlie Gardens, historic homes, museums and parks. In contrast, other attractions explore the quirky side of Cape Fear. For instance, did you know about the movie studio, Serpentarium, ghost walks, haunted pub crawls, surf camps, fishing clinics, and places to see carnivorous plants, endangered sea turtles, sharks, alligators, and prehistoric creatures?
Even the name Cape Fear is intriguing. The Cape Fear River, which winds its way through Wilmington, was named by early explorers when their ships ran aground and sank due to dangerous shifting shoals where the river meets the sea. Today these wrecks afford amazing diving and fishing opportunities. And the Cape Fear Coast is now a popular vacation getaway. Downtown Wilmington’s 230+ National Register Historic District offers historic homes, a scenic Riverwalk, and more than 200 shops, restaurants, attractions, tours, and riverboat cruises, all within walking distance along the banks of the scenic Cape Fear River. The river’s origin is just one of the many intriguing aspects about Wilmington & NC’s Cape Fear Coast.
