I had wanted to visit to Ljubljana for around five years now and finally made the trip in March 2008 and the city didn't disappoint. The city centre intself is very compact and easy to navigate centring around Presernov Trg, the towns main square situated alongside the River Ljubljanica. The square itself is dominated by the dark pink Franciscan Church and the unusual Triple Bridge. Watching over the square and city centre is Ljubljana Castle on top of the hill. The area around the square is filled with narrow pedestrian streets filled with many bars, restaurants and cafe's many with outdoor seating. Also nearby is the beautiful People's Loan Bank Building with its colourful facade.
Across the river you come to Mestni Trg, the traditional centre of Ljubljana. In this area you come across the impressive Cathedral of St. Nicoholas, Town Hall and Robba Fountain. Following the river to the east you will follow along the Plecnik Colonnade and enter Vodnikov Trg where there is an outdoor market. Nearby is the newly opened Funicular Railway up to the castle. Also nearby is the famous Dragon Bridge or Zmajski Most which has four large sculpted dragons who have become the cities emblem. |
| | Away from the very centre of the city, you can visit Kongresni Trg and Republic Square. The former houses the Philharmonic Hall and Ursuline Church. Nearby is the beautiful Opera House. Republic Square was my least favourite of Ljubljana's Squares and is dominated by two large ugly towers and mostly consists of a large city carpark. The square does have several interesting sculptures. Further to the north west you come to the large urban park - Tivoli Park which is a lovely open park housing Tivoli Mansion. Nearby is Ljubljana's main Orthodox Temple and The American Embassy housed in a beautiful house. A short stroll to the south, near the river you will come to Trnovo Church an impressive 18th century church. |

| | Joze Plecnik A lot of Ljubljana's unique architecture can be attributed to the Architect Joze Plecnik (1872-1957). The Slovenian architect spent a lot of time involved in Ljubljana's urban planning and architecture as well as planning and designing some buildings and bridges in Vienna and Prague. The Triple Bridge, Trnovo Bridge, Church of St. Francis and Colonnade are just a few of Plecnik's impressive contribution's to present day Ljubljana. The Ljubljana Architectural Museum houses a presentation and collection of Plecnik's work. |
