The Tiny Capital of the Tiny Country Vaduz is a strange place with its own unique atmoshere. You know you have left Switzerland or Austria and are now somewhere different. The city has a very tidy and compact layout with the two main streets Stadtle and Aulestrasse running in a V-shape and contining most of the town's sights. However it is worth heading further north from the centre to Mittledorf to get a taste for what serves as Liechtenstein's traditional neighbourhood. Mittledorf is as close to a Vaduz Old Town as you are likely to encounter. |
| | Vaduz Sights There are a number of things to keep visitors busy, even if only for a few hours. The centre of the town is very compact and easy to navigate and has some interesting sights including the Town Hall/Rathaus, Government Building and the unusual New Parliament Building. These buildings are all located along one of Vaduz's busiest streets - Stadtle. As well as these main attractions there a variety of museums all along this street including the Liechtenstein National Museum (Landesmuseum), Art Museum (Kunstmuseum) and Postage Stamp Museum (Briefmarkenmuseum). Along Stadtle there are also a number of interesting sculptures and statues which line the pedestrian street. Further to the south just beyond the pedestrain area you will come to the beautiful Vaduz Cathedral, whose tall spire towers over the cenre of Vaduz. The inside isn't as impressive as the outside would suggest but it's worth a look. |
| | Of course the most famous landmark in Vaduz is the picture perfect Schloss Vaduz. This impressive castle sits atop of the mountains overlooking the town centre and is surrounded by tall snow-capped mountains. Although you cannot enter the castle as it is still the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein and his family you can walk up the hill to the castle walls where you can enjoy great views over the town and surrounding countryside.
Probably the next most famous sight in Vaduz is the pituresque and aptly named 'Red House' complete with rows of grape vines running down the slope in front. This house is located in the Mittledorf area of the city and its' red couloured gable side can be spotted straight away from the castle hill.
Outside the centre of town there isn't much apart from the FIS Ski Museum, Court Wine Cellars and the Football Stadium, home to the mighty Liechtenstein football team!
I enjoyed my one night stay in Liechtenstein but to be honest, now that I've seen it I don't think I'll be returning any time soon. |
