| Entering Liechtenstein - Don't Blink! |
| | Vaduz - Capital of Liechtenstein Vaduz is a strange but interesting town. First impressions are not exactly exciting but once you stcratch at the surface of this town you will find some interesting things to see and do, not least of all the magnificent castle (Schloss Vaduz) which looms over the town from its moountain perch. The castle location with its' snow-capped mountain backdrop is a very pituresque sight. Of course you can't enter the castle as it is the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein and his family but you can climb up the hill to the castle walls to enjoy great views out over Vaduz. Apart from the castle, a stroll south along the town's main street, Stadtle, will uncover other interesting sights such as the Town Hall/Rathaus, Parliament and Government Buildings, Stamp Museum!, Art Museum/Kunstmuseum, History Museum/Landesmuseum and beautiful Cathedral. On the other side of town (north) you can explore the area of Mitteldorf, (the closest thing to a Vaduz Old town) where you will see some traditional houses, most notable of which is the impressive 'Red House'.
Outside Vaduz the country has more to offer, but mostly in the way of scenic mountain hikes and trails. The town of Schaan, which runs almost seamlessly into Vaduz, doesn't have much to see apart from some nice churches, some roman settlement reamains and impressive mountain views. Balzers is the only other place I visited and that was only for a quick stop on the way to the train station to get a quick look at the pituesque castle on the hill in the centre of town.
All in all there are things to keep you busy in Vaduz for a one night stay and for a couple of nights if you want to explore the mountainous area of the country but I was satisfied that I saw most of what Vaduz and its' surrounding area during a one night stay. Glad I went to see the interesting country, but let's just say I won't be rushing to get back :) |
