Dungarvan - My Home from Home

I moved to Dungarvan in September 2005 from my home place in Tipperary and loved the area straight away. Waterford in general is a popular holiday destination especially with the Irish themselves. Everybody rightly sings the praises of beautiful areas such as Kerry, Cork and Wicklow but for me Waterford ranks among them, as having some of the most beautiful and clean beaches and scenery in the entire country.
What Dungarvan and the county lacks in bustling nighlife and awe inspiring historical landmarks, it makes up for in scenery, miles of beautiful beaches and scenic mountain trails.
Dungarvan itself is the second largest town in County Waterford behind Waterford City. The town is located in the western part of the county and is very accessible from Waterford City, Cork (via Youghal) and Tipperary (via Clonmel)
Dungarvan is a compact town with most of the town's amenities centred around the town square. There is a large shopping centre and commercial area just off the square and the town's banks and post office are all located in or around the square.
As you drive through the square you come to Dungarvan Harbour which is very busy during the summer with boats and yachts filling the marina.
Crossing the bridge over the mouth of the Colligan River you are technically leaving Dungarvan and entering the village of Abbeyside. (Very important to make theis destinction as I found out very quickly when I moved here!)
Abbeyside has it's own church and school (I teach in the local primary school in Abbeyside - Scoil Mhuire.) Abbeyside is mainly a residential area but does have a small beach near the primary school which a lot of people use for walking and canoeing)
Dungarvan is a busy thriving town and as holiday detination would suit people interested in the outdoors with a wide variety of watersports, fishing, hill walking, cycling, golfing and swimming on offer as well as a growing commercial and shopping reputation.
Dungarvan would make an ideal stop over for a few days for anybody travelling from Kerry and Cork and going on to Dublin, Wicklow or the East Coast in general.
Clonea Beach, Dungarvan

Beaches Beaches Beaches

Coming from a landlocked county in Ireland I always loved going to the beach and as a child I remember travelling to Clonea Beach during the summer holidays every year. Little did I know that years later I would be lucky enough to be living just five minutes drive from this very beach.
Living in or visiting Co. Waterford you are spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful beaches. Dungarvan itself has several fine beaches suitable for walking, swimming and water sports. Clonea beach (Blue Flag Beach) just outside Dungarvan is probably the best and safest of any of the beaches in the whole county though Tramore people may argue that they have the finest beach in Waterford.
You can enjoy great surfing at either of these beaches and there is a surf school and rental opportunites in Tramore.
Between Tramore and Dungarvan you come across more beautiful and secluded beaches along the coastal road. many people miss these beaches because the newer main road between Waterford City and Dungarvan is inland and doesn't follow the coast. Anyone visiting the area should be advised to skip this road and travel along the scenic Copper Coast Road to visit the unspoilt and beautiful beaches of Stradbally, Bunmahon and Annestown.
The Copper Coast itself is a designated European Geo Park and the driving through it you are rewarded with spectacular coastal views.

Comeragh Mountains

Dividing the counties of Waterford and Tipperary you have the Comeragh Mountains. From the Main Dungarvan to Waterford City road you can view this small but spectacular mountain range.
A hiker's paradise the Comeraghs are very accessible from the main raod and there is a road (albeit very narrow) mountain up to Mahon Falls in the centre of the mountains.
Mahon Falls are located in the Comeragh Mountains just 10 minutes drive off the Main Road. There is a small carpark located nearby and you take a path up to the falls. For the more adventurous you can take a hike up the mountains and enjoy spectacular aerial views of the falls and the surrounding coastal area.
