Inis Óirr gives a better indication of the peaceful and tranquil traditions of the Aran Islands and their inhabitants than Inis Mór. Generally the island is far less busy than Inis Mor and you really can get a sense of what life on the islands was traditionally like. Life on this harsh rocky island couldn’t be easy but facilities and services have improved and while traditional ways of life have changed to include tourism as a main source of income, it has impacted less on Inis Óirr than on the larger Inis Mór. Tourism has brought its downsides but has also helped improve life for the locals who have access to better services including more frequent ferry and air connection to the mainland and improved communications.
Like Inis Mór the stunning landscape and historic sites will keep you busy but the islands lacks the dramatic coastal cliffs of Inis Mór and Inis Meáin. It is however blessed with a beautiful beach right by the pier as well as the added attraction of a 15th century castle and ancient fort as well as a variety of monastic and early Christian sites. Inis Oirr has an even greater concentration of stone walls than the other two larger islands and from a height the patchwork of small fields and limestone areas enclosed by the stone walls are a sight in themselves. Collectively the walls of Inis Óirr stretch for thousands of miles!
While there are not the same number of pubs and restaurants on Inis Óirr as on Inis Mór (and no ATM by the way) there are a couple of pubs where you can soak up some traditional music and sink of few pints and ssshhhhh there are no gardai (police) on the island so opening and closing times are generally ad lib!
The main sights of interest on Inis Óirr are O’Brien’s Castle, Teampall Chaoimhain, Cill Ghobnait and the Plassey Shipwreck.
Inis Óirr has a dedicated arts and culture centre which displays traditional and contemporary arts. The centre has a... more travel advice
