Inis Mór is far and away the biggest and most popular of the Aran Islands. For years it had a reputation of peace and tranquillity and while this is still true, the island has become a very popular destination for foreign and Irish visitors alike. The mainlanders love to escape to the islands to get away from the often hectic and busy modern lives of today’s Ireland and at the weekends the island becomes a mecca for the Irish themselves who head to the Inis Mor for a short break and a bit of craic.

This has led to a certain level of commerciality but this shouldn’t detract to much from your experience of the island, although you will have to content yourself with sharing much of the islands unique atmosphere and sights with others. The great thing about Inis Mor is that away from the tourist hotspots of Kilronan and Dun Aengus, you can still get away from it all and can find a spot all of your own. The far west and east of the island is still rugged and isolated especially during the week and early/late in the day when the day-trippers have left.

Apart from the great nightlife and traditional music you will be able to keep yourself very busy on Inis Mor, cheking out the ancient stone forts, early Christian churches and monastic sites as well as soaking up the unique landscape and coastal scenery of the island. Botanists and bird lovers are well catered for and walkers and cyclists will be at home on Inis Mor. Perhaps the greatest asset to the island is the friendly welcoming locals who love to chat to all visitors whether from mainland Ireland or Papua New Guinea! Actually if you get chatting to a local you may find yourself losing an hour or two of you time! By the way all the islands are designated Gaeltacht areas which means that the locals all speak Irish as their first language so learning a cupla focal (few words) is appreciated by the locals.
