When people book a flight to Barcelona with Ryanair, they are often surprised and a little put out to discover that the flight does not actually fly into Barcelona airport but to Girona Airport about an hour from the city. However this should not be viewed as a hindrance but an opportunity as Girona has much to offer even if just for one night. When we booked a trip to Barcelona for February we booked with Ryanair into Girona and after reading a little about the city we decided that we would spend one night here before moving on to Barcelona and in hindsight are glad we did. |
| | Old Town and River Onyar Girona is the capital of the Catalan province of Girona and lies on the River Onyar. The area to the east of the river is where most visitors head. The buildings on either side of the river are built right on the river's edge and tower over the river, lending the riverside vague impressions of Venice. Rambla de la Libertat is the main commercial centre in the historic old town and here you will find nice cafe's and restaurants as well as the town's tourist office. Just off the Rambla you will find a maze of old alleys and streets with narrow streets and overhaning balconies. |
| Cathedral and Eglésia de Sant Feliu from City Wall |
| | The Ramparts, Cathedral and Historic Walk The fact that Girona, as a city, has survived 25 sieges and 7 captures is testimony enough to the resilience of the city as a whole. Even more astonishing is that much of the city's ancient ramparts and city walls have survived through all this historic turbulence. The Ramparts are open to the public and form a significant part of the city's interesting archeological walk, which follows a path along the city walls. The walk starts at the Església de Sant Pere de Galligants which houses the city's archeological finds. The walk continues through the North Gate where Roman foundation stones mark the Via Augusta (ancient road between Tarragona and Rome) The walk comes close to Girona Cathedral which was built in 1416. The cathedral is built in the Gothic Style (apart from the west face of Catalan Baroque) The huge Cathedral, towers over the Old Town and coupled with the towering Eglésia de Sant Feliu form the most significant landmarks of Girona's town centre. From the Cathedral the walk continues along the city walls and offers great views over the city and passes over the University. The walk ends at the Placa Catalunya in the city centre. |
