Surrounded by Nature | Oslo Harbour - 20 mins to nature |
It's hard to believe that, while you are standing in the centre of one of's Europe's major capitals, you are still less than 20 mins metro ride from beautiful and secluded nordic forestry and countryside. Catch the T-bahn to Holmenkollen to the skijump tower and then continue on to Frognerseternen. When there is snow on the ground this place is great for a wander. Lovely views and there's a nice restaurant located nearby. As Cross-country skiing is Norway's national sport you would expect Oslo to have a certain amount of cross-country facilities. What you might not expect is the actual extent to these facilities. Oslo is surrounded by miles and miles of cross-country ski tracks complete with lighting (for those dark nordic evenings) and stop over huts. |
| Holmenkollen Ski Jump Tower |
| | Ski-jumping!!! As I visited Oslo in March, I was delighted to discover that the world ski-jumping championship were on that weekend. Being from Ireland I wouldn't get much opportunity to see ski-jumping. So full of curiosity I made my way up to Holmenkollen ski-jump tower along with the crowds of fanatic ski-jump followers. Inside the arena I was surprised by the great atmosphere building up around the jump tower. (Still haven't found out what all the bell-ringing is about!) Here I was, propably the only Irish guy in the whole place and making it very obvious as I slipped and slid my way to my vantage point up on the hill as small children came running past me with ease as I clung the wooden fence running up the slope. Finally getting to the top of the hill (very wet and covered in snow) I found a nice spot and settled in to watch these lunatics hurl themselves off a big giant ramp on a pair skis. I soon discovered another of my many novice mistakes. Tired of standing I decided to sit down - problem was everywhere was covered with snow of ice. (It was right now I realised what those foam boards were and why everyone was buying them outside the arena.) Although ending up very wet and cold I enjoyed the ski-jumping events and hopefully will get to go to another event sometime in the future - I have to learn how to walk on icey snow first. I'll be better prepared next time! |
