Stockholm - City of Islands Just returned from my trip to Stockholm and and really enjoyed the city and all it has to offer. The actual situation and layout of the city is very interesting as, unlike most capital cities, Stockholm is not situated on a river but rather between a sea and a lake (The BalticSea and Lake Malaren). The city itself consists of fourteen islands linked together by bridges. |
| | The Archipelago Of course these fourteen islands just contain the actual city of Stockholm but the Stockholm archipelago contains thousands more islands, many of which are inhabited. Vistitors can take a trip into the archilpelago either through the many boat tours on offer (not so many in winter) or you can take one of the archipelago ferry boats used by visitors and locals alike. During winter the tour boats are less frequent and don't travel far into the archipelago. The ferry boats (waxholmsbolaget) travel further into the archipelago but if you want to take in the winter scenery on the way to the archipelago islands you will have to get the early morning ferries. The evening boats leave late and it will be dark so you won't see anything! I was advised that the archipelago is not worth seeing in winter but ignoring this I decided to venture out on one of the ferries and I have to say I was not dissapointed. In fact I find it hard to believe that the archipelago could be any more impressive in the summer than it was during the snowy winter landscape I experienced. Guess I'll have to go back to find out! |

HORSCHECK Sun Mar 16, 2008 11:16 UTC Another gorgeous page of yours. I also liked the Vasa Museum a lot, although I am not too much of a museum goer. |
