The S-Shaped Grand Canal is the main water-way of Venice and is 3800 metres long. It begins near the Santa Lucia railway station and ends near Santa Maria della Salute. The Canal is busy with traffic up and down with water taxis, vaporetti, gondolas and tragettos. The canal is tranversed by 3 bridges, the most famous, being The Rialto Bridge. The bridge is the oldest in Venice and was the only bridge to cross the Grand Canal until the 19th century. Vaporetto No. 1 travels along the entire Grand Canal and continues on to the island of Lido. Taking this vaporetto is a great way to see all the sights cheaply. Of course if you can afford a private gondola, this would be a great way to see the canal!

Piazza San Marco will undoubtably feature on every visitor's itinerary and understandably so. The square is the most famous landmark of Venice complerte with it's magnificent Basilica San Marco, Campanile and Doge's Palace. The Piazza dates from the 9th century. Originally the square was much smaller but was extended and enlarged in 1177, when the Rio Batario and canal dock by the Doge's Palace were filled in. During the Venetian festival the Piazza San Marco is the main centre for festivities.
