After seven weeks of hard work on the project in Parnaiba, we were given a well deserved break. Before heading back to Ireland we headed to Jericoacoara for a few days rest and relaxation...and what a place to do it.
"Jeri", as the place is affectionaltely known is a place which needs to be experienced to fully comprehend. A small town virtually inaccesible by road...Jericoacoara can only be reached by a two-three hour journey on the back of a four by four.
Miles of beautiful beach surrounded by towering white dunes and rocky hills protects this small paradise town where electricity is supplied by generators and the streets are mere sand tracks.
One of my worldwide favourite destinations!
Two of the must do activities in Jeri is to watch the sun set from the Sunset Dune on the beach. Every evening people make the steep climb to the top of the dune to watch the amazing sunset. One of the most stunning sights I have ever witnessed.
Another must do, is to head out to Pedra Furada to watch the sun set (again) behind the fire rock. This rock is a natural arch of rock and if you are present at a certain time of year you can watch the sun set through the hole in the rock. We got a great sunset with the last of the suns rays illuminating the eye of the rock. Another unforgettable experience which will live with me forever.
The beaches of Jericoacoara are so stunning. They have been voted as being in the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. There are numerous different beaches and you can always find your own spot where nobody will bother you.
Above the beaches are the rocky cliffs were you can go for nice walks and hikes through the hills and along the cliffs around Jericoacoara.
As for the village itself. It has a lovely laid back atmosphere to it and you get the feeling that life here is so easy going. I didn't see one policeman in my time in Jeri and for good reason. Disturbance and Crime simply does not exist in Jeri. You can have a good time, relax, swim, surf, eat and of course drink in the great and unioque atmosphere of Jeri.
While the overall atmosphere of the place is relaxed and calm, at night the place really comes to life, especially at weekends. Down on the beach there is always a party, where the music and party move out onto the sandy streets and beach and doesn't end til the sun comes up...if even!!!
Jeri is Jeri, there is nowhere like it anywhere in the world...that I have experienced or heard of anyway. For our group, who had been experienced the more underpriviledged and impoverieshed side of Brazil for seven weeks it was a strange feeling to be surrounded by so much affluence again and of course there was an element of guilt having experienced and seen what we had just been part of in Piaui, but Jeri was a great place to just come and reflect on the project and our experiences during the summer.

Jeri is magic!! I recalled to memory many wonderful moments of my visits! I wasn't lucky to see Pedra Furada illuminated by the setting sun. But I remember very well pousada Maxitalia. Great tips and pictures Brian!
