Beachy Bliss

Mirissa is one of those places you dream of being when stuck at home on a cold, miserably wet, October night in Ireland! A long bend of clean white sand backed by swaying palm trees and turquoise waters. Mirissa is what Unawatuna would have been like before it was dampened by development. While there are dangerous rip currents and heavy waves to contend with, Mirrissa is among the finest beaches I have ever been.

Mirissa Sunset

While nowhere near as developed as other beaches further to the west, Mirissa does have plenty of accommodation and dining options, although in general they have been more thoughtfully erected with most of them being hidden from view behind the banks of palm trees. In fact apart from one large and somewhat out of place resort style hotel, all the other places along the sea front are set back from the beach and are built on a fairly small scale leaving the beach somewhat intact with not nearly as much beach erosion as the likes of Unawatuna.

Capping off the idyllic location is a small offshore island which you can wade out to through the shallow water for the best sunset views imaginable. Snorkelling and surfing are also on offer at Mirissa especially at the western end of the beach and there are also opportunities for short walks into the forest interior which pass through impossibly quaint and friendly villages

Intrigued by the stilt fishing. The waters really do reach to such a high level for fishes to be caught by the nets? Woah
