Atlanta, founded in 1837, entered the national consciousness during the Civil Var, when its rail junction became a war target.
Atlanta rose from the ashes to become the state capitol in 1868. Today Atlanta is a city of nearly a half million people, home to over four hundred Fortune 500 companies and is the headquarters for such
commercial giants as Coca-Cola,CNN . Atlanta is one of the South's largest, fastest growing cities.
Atlanta is an intriguing blend of past and present. It is a sprawling metropolis which still retains its Southern flair.
The city has three main areas, Buckhead, Midtown and Downtown, which run North to South, respectively.
Buckhead is a mecca for shopping and nightlife.
Midtown is a great place to eat and take in the arts at the Wooruff Arts Center. Downtown is home to Underground Atlanta and Sweet Auburn, Martin Luther King
neighborhood.
Georgia Sate Capitol, this building, built in 1889, is the seat of Georgia's goverment and is designed to resemble the national Capitol.

If the city is not your thing or you are just saturated with concrete, head to Stone Mountain Park.
It's really a very special park which you could spend a good day.

Great post about unsafe neighborhoods in ATL. While there is not a clear delineation on a map for the safe and unsafe areas, a general idea for me - I've lived here almost 15 yrs - is that neighborhoods north of "North Avenue" are relatively safe.
Atlanta is like most major US cities. You need to be aware of your surroundings almost always. As you move out into the suburbs, safety becomes more like a smaller USA town with purely opportunistic crime, if any. Where I live in Marietta, crime seems to be 20 miles away. I know this isn't true.
Not every neighborhood south of North Avenue is unsafe, just that even when driving there, we stay in the center lane, go during daylight hours, lock our car doors and are prepared to get-the-hell-out-of-there if someone knocks on the car window when we are stopped.
The area around the Carter Center is fine during the day, not so much later.
I'd be cautious around downtown and underground Atlanta after dark. During the day, it is fine.
GA-Tech and Little 5-Points is fine almost all the time, but be aware.
CNN, World of Coke, Aquarium, GA-Dome and Phillips Arena attractions are fine, but be aware.
If you are driving and parking, do not leave anything visible in your vehicle at any time - morning, noon, or night. Put everything in the trunk **before you park** so nobody sees you do it. This applies to any parking anywhere in the metro area. A bag on a seat while running into a quickie-mark for 3 minutes is asking for a broken window.
Northern communities seem a little safer to me. No issues at Stone Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, or any state parks that I've noticed, even parks in-town.
I worked in mid-town for a decade and was never mugged or had my vehicle broken into. I didn't know anyone who was mugged either. I did see about 1 car window a week smashed around the Fox and Georgian Terrace Hotel - whether in street, lot, or in garage parking. The time of day didn't seem to matter.
The people of Atlanta are amazing. You will probably find someone willing to help if you look lost or need directions or a recommended restaurant.
