  • (2 Eszterházy Square)

The Cathedral, which was built in honor of the evangelists Saint Michael and Saint John, is standing in the intersection of Széchenyi Street (also called Main Street) and Kossuth Lajos Street (previously called Káptalan Street) on the high ground of Pyrker Square. The Cathedral of Eger is the second biggest cathedral in Hungary. Eger was given archiepiscopacy in 1804, and János Pyrker, the bishop of Eger, ordered the designs of the building from the architect József Hild.

  • The Cathedral stands on a slight hill and dominates its surroundings with its size. There has been a church on the site continuously since the Middle Ages, but the present basilica dates from 1831-6. The designer of this building in Neoclassical style was József Hild, a great architect of his day, although the architecture of the Basilica (particularly the side elevations) has often been criticized. However, the main front, with its monumental columns, is truly imposing, and inside it has fine proportions. At the bottom of the flights of steps to the main front are statues of St. Stephen and St. Ladislas, both 10th c. Hungarian kings. At the beginning of the second flight of stairs are statues of the apostles St. Peter and St. Paul, done, like the allegorical figures on the main front, by the Italian-born sculptor Marco Casagrande

    Things To Do: Minaret

  • The Minaret built in the Turkish era is thought to date from the early 17th century and was part of a mosque which has been totally destroyed. The Minaret, 115 feet high, contains a spiral staircase up to the roof balcony from which the muezzin used to call the Moslems to prayer.

Among all the buildings of this type, the minaret of Eger is found in the northern-most point of the former Ottoman Empire. During the Turkish occupation Eger became the seat of a vilayet which is a Turkish domain including several sanjaks.

Another remainder of the Turkish period is a bathing pool. The open air bath, set in an attractive park, is also fed by thermal springs.

The Minaret is open daily from 10am to 6pm, but the ticket taker in the little booth at the Minaret's base is not always faithful to these hours. If no one is there, you might ask at the nearby Minaret Hotel.

  • The County Hall was built between 1749 and 1756 based on the designs made by Mátyás Gerl. Its chief attractions are its two wrought-iron gates. They were made by Henrik Fazola, who came to Eger from Würzburg.

  • Eger is an old town, and owes its importance to the bishopric created by King Stephen in 1010, which was one of the richest in the whole of Hungary. In 1552 Eger resisted the repeated assaults of a large Turkish force; in 1596, however, it was given up to the Turks by the Austrian party in the garrison, and remained in their possession until 1687. It was created an archbishopric in 1814. During the revolution of 1848—1849, Eger, was remarkable for the patriotic spirit displayed by its inhabitants; and it was here that the principal campaigns against the Auetrians were organized

  • The main square of the town is Dobó Square. It was a market place in olden times. The Minorite Church and the Town Hall are the two chief attractions of the square. Also, there are two groups of statues there. István Dobó's statue, which was made of bronze by the sculptor Alajos Strobl in 1907, is on the east side i.e. in the direction of the Fortress, while "The Valiant Warriors of the Borders", which was made by Zsigmond Kisfaludy Strobl in 1967, is in front of the Town Hall.

  • ONE OF THE MOST BEUATIFUL BAROQUE CHURCHES IN EUROPE
The first Minorite church was built on the bank of Eger stream. As the stream used to be abounding in water, its floods seriously damaged the small church and a new one was needed to be built. (1758-1773)

The Father Superior of the monks had been castigated for building such an imposing church which was in fact in contrast to their attitude being poor.

  • The Cistercian Church stands in the intersection of Széchenyi Street and Bródy Sándor Street. In olden times there was a Moslem mosque in the place of the church. The land was then given to the Jesuits, who started the construction of their monastery and church in 1699. The monastery was completed by 1727, and the masses were celebrated in the church from 1773 on but the building was finished a long time later only. The Jesuit order was dissolved in 1773 and the church was taken over by the Cistercians.
