My foremost destination to the West

by csordila - last update: Feb 11, 2009

Zürich - Anno 1973
It was the autumn of 1973 when I visited Zürich for the first time and it was the first time I had been in the WEST from my country occupied by the Soviet Army and surrounded by the so called iron curtain!
Since then I have visited the city several times.

Zürich - 30 years later

Switzerland is the model of the politeness.

The most typical words for Zurich: bustle, fizzing life. And like that, as if a wonderful postcard would have come true.
I did not see ever such a diverse, free, sparkling city.
To walk along Lake Zurich is like that, as if you would be on the seacoast, the panorama of Felsenegg cannot be compared with nothing else, and the Bahnhofstrasse though, as if I would be shopping in New York.
The overall picture is incredible!
However, the people are somehow cold, but they inquire about each other's health smiling very politely.
One more thing; the dialect!!!! Always seems to you, as if they would speak German, but you do understand no one word!!
Downtown

Wandering the streets

The Romanesque and Baroque Church of St.Peter locates on one of the most beautiful places of Zurich in the middle of the Old Town on the West Bank of river Limmat, close by the ruins of a late Roman fortress at the Lindenhof.
Long ago, there used to be a fire guard who would keep watch from the tower and had to look in each of the four directions once every 15 minutes all day. You will enjoy a marvelous sight from the former fire warden room over the city and into the distance.
The tower clock originally was the official timekeeper and all public clocks of the city were adjusted to it.
It has the largest tower dial of Europe, its record-breaking outside diameter is 8.64 meters, the minute hand alone is almost 4 meters long . read more

Cons:"Schwizerdütsch dialect!!!!"
In A Nutshell:"Swiss do not like to smile too much, but I like them!"

You picked a very good place to go for your first visit to the West in 1973. Glad you have been back to Zürich several times since then. Thanks for mentioning the opera house and for including the link to the "Zürich by Bike" website.

Fabulous and very informative start here. I am just back from a weekend in Zurich. Oh well, and as I am a chocoholic we wanted to visit the Spruengli cafe on Saturday but it was really packed so we had to leave. Keep up the good work.
