The picturesque old town is sometimes called Little Vienna and situated at the Polish-Czech border in the Beskiden belonging to the Karpaten. Southeast from the city one of the largest Polish winter sports areas lies.
The town and the region was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In that time there was a small but lively Hungarian community in the town comprised mostly of officers and clerks.
