One of the tourists' popular targets: a Coffeeshop, one from among much. Standing in front of Centraal Station there are about 40 coffeeshops within a 10-minute walk. You can get coffee at these places too, but if that is all you want just look around for a café and you will be set. The main attraction here is the marijuana or hash you can safely and cheaply buy from someone behind the counter, and then smoke it right there. How this all works, you can visit a coffee shop without feeling really weird about it. The highest prices of cannabis/hash are in Amsterdam, in central location can be up to €12.00 /g for grass and €30.00/g for hash. One of the cheapest coffee shops with still good stuff is Central coffeeshop located at Prins Hendrikkade 89, a bag of 2,4g Special costs €12.50. The maximum ammount you may buy in a coffee shop is 5g per person. To get a "grass-seed" even on the flower market. The law allows anybody to cultivate a cannabis at home. The regulation is very funny for me: according to the law smoking a cigarette containing pure marijuana is allowed, however smoking with tobacco is strictly prohibited and fined, a €300 fine for the first offense and €2,400 for a fourth. Never forget Netherlands is the most liberal place in Europe, legalizing sex (prostitution) and drugs (hash).

Local Customs: An entirely Dutch phenomenon - Street Organ

In the early part of twentieth century the Netherlands became world famous for its street organs. Love it or hate it, or just putting a smile on your face, even today the sound of street organs belongs to Amsterdam as much as its winding canals and its liberal attitude. It is true that the organ tends to attract a more appreciative audience from tourists rather than locals. In the city the number of them had dropped to just three in the last couple of years. They are typically found in the busiest shopping streets on a Saturday afternoon, or somewhere in the Red Light District. Although the music is free, their owners would not quibble at a contribution of a couple of Euro out of the hands of passersbys. Following what has become a real Amsterdam tradition, Street Organ festival takes place on the Dam Square each year. A collection of street organs you can visit in the National Museum From Musical Clock To Street Organ in Utrecht.

The narrowest house in the world is to be found on the Singel, no.7. Only one metre in breadth, it is barely wider than the front door. The people who live there have to be slim! However in the reality only the front side is so narrow. Behind this facade the house broadens out to more normal dimensions. Yet the narrowest house in Europe is still to be found in Amsterdam on Oude Hoogstraat 22, between the Dam and the Nieuwmarkt. This house is 2.02m wide and 6.0 metres deep. Another narrow house is located nearby, on the Kloveniersburgwal 26, Mr Trip's Coachman's House, 2.44m wide. This latest one is very special, because its location is opposite of the widest house (26m) of Amsterdam.

joiwatani Fri Apr 10, 2009 20:00 UTC Legalizing sex and drugs are probably the best solution. We can unclog our prisons in the U.S.! We spend too much money maintaining people in prisons!
