The island of Hvar

Beach promenad

Hvar, the island in Adriatic Sea, is the longest and the sunniest Croatian island. The major places (all on the coast of the island) are: the town of Hvar, Stari Grad, Jelsa, Sucuraj and Vrboska. The island is famous for its pleasant Mediterranean climate, it is characterized by gentle winters, warm summers and many hours of sunshine.

The town of Hvar

The town is the largest settlement on the island. The town's harbour provided a suitable location for a port, being geographically ideal. You can find crystal clear sea with rocky and small gravel beaches. Hvar is the town of a unique cultural and historical heritage such as: the fortress, the Cathedral of St. Stephan, the Franciscan monastery, town loggia, the Hektorovic Palace, the arsenal, the theatre and also has many galleries, museums and exhibitions.
The guests have a variety of quality accommodations at their disposal in hotels, apartments, guest houses, boarding houses and campsites. Sports and recreational opportunities are excellent - beach yoga, safari tours, tennis, climbing, hiking, basketball, football, water sports and many more.

Port of the Venetian Empire

Hvar gained glory and power during middle ages being an important port within the Venetian, naval empire. The Roman settlement was located near the port (3rd c. BC), and the late antique at the foot of the hill, where the construction of town ramparts started after 1278. The centre of the old part of the town was formed in the 15th century. On the northern slope above the square, within the town ramparts are partly preserved palaces of the Hvar aristocracy.

Lazlo a great page on this pretty island. The Bonj Les Bains sounds lovely- if a bit extravagant! And I also prefer my food not to be moving lol! Good photos.

Fine new tips! When our children were small we vacationed on one of the islands in this region, not Hvar, I don't think, but one of the others nearby. -- Thanks for your two visits to my new Aachen page.
