The capital of the Italian economy

by csordila - last update: Oct 17, 2009

Not as charming as Florence, as grand as Rome or as romantic as Venice, Milan is often overlooked by travelers, This city has a certain feel about it that makes you believe the weather simply ought to be overcast all the time, though the city offers a lot of valuable things from the italian history. Despite Milan's size and sprawl, many of its museums, churches, and other sights are within easy walking distance of one another in the vicinity of the Duomo and Castello Sforzesco.

La Galleria

A speciality of Milan is the Galeria Vittorio Emanuele. This is an old and elegant arcade that connects Piazza del Duomo with the Piazza delle Scala, where you will find the world renowned theater Scala. It has a special atmosphere due to the glass ceiling and the mosaic floor, reputed to be the world's oldest shopping mall.
The building houses shops and cafes including a McDonalds that seemed a bit out of place there.
An amazing Christmas tree is set up every year at the centre of Gallery. The 12 meters tall sparkling tree is decorated with more than 8000 Swarovski crystals.
La Galleria was built not only to connect the Duomo with the Scala, but to represent the union of church and state which came about after the nationalist revolution of 1848.

Il Duomo

Everybody visiting into the city have to visit the Duomo, which was started to build in 1386 yet but only in the 19th century (!) won its definitive form. This largest Gothic building of Italy emphasize the active economic and cultural contacts between the Viscontis and the dynasties of areas lying to the north from Alps. It is realy an amazing building both inside and outside. It is without a doubt one of the most perfect and most overwhelming church anywhere.
Visitors have an opportunity to take an elevator up onto the roof, or they can go up on stair, which means the climbing of more than 200 steps, in order to get a great view to most of the sightseeings which may also be visited by taking the Tram Turistico.

The opera house, Sforza Castle, the The Duomo all looks like wonderful places. Yet, I must say that huge cup of Cappuccino works for me:)!
