The whole city becomes colorful and spectacular when the citizens celebrate their Carnival. The carnival, with its attendant tradition of mask-wearing, has existed since the 13th century. For centuries, they have dressed up in colorful costumes with the typical Venetian masks. The mask has a long tradition: for ten days a year, everyone can put it on and allow to the illusion of being someone else. The the significance of the mask is proved in the comedies of Carlo Goldoni too, where the masks play an important role always. But more exciting thing (5-10 € ), if you have a carnival mask painted by street beauticians for yourself, which suits your character. The disguises are however very expensive (2000-3000 € ). Most of them are the property of the city or one of the local clubs, but it is possible to lend them; a 24 hour rental ranges between 400 and 600 € Venice got the title City of the Carnivals in the 18. century only. In that time it was not so unusual that kings and princes of European courts took part in the Carnival, in order to have a good time on the city's squares and on its streets, in the casinos and in theatres. For example in 1869 also the Emperor of Austria, Franz Josef took part in the Carnival incognito under the name of Count of Falchenstein. When the republic has fallen, the carnival became forgotten. The tradition came true in 1979 again and today already one of the world's most popular events. In 2009 it took place from 14 to 24 February. The beginning of the carnival is signaling by the star attraction named Flight of the Angel. Starting from 2001 instead of the wooden dove a real person is let down by the help of a cable from the campanile. On half way downwards confetti showers on the people standing on the St. Mark square. This year - 2009, Margherita Missoni, of the famed Milanese fashion family, helped Venice's annual carnival get under way.

Cappuccino — a shot of espresso infused with steamed milk and foam and drunk in the morning by Italians, but never after lunch or dinner, since with that much milk is considered a meal in itself, - the classic Italian breakfast. The second rule is to never order cappuccino after an original Italian meal, Italians can't understand why anyone would order a calorie-rich cappuccino after a big meal. Rule number three is to never sit down at a table with your cappuccino - Italians make their coffee luke-warm so it can be drunk quickly - if you sit down and drink your cappuccino slowly it will be cold before you are half-way through it. Break the three cappuccino rules and you will expose yourself as a tourist! By the way, a cup of cappuccino you can enjoy for 10 € at Caffè Florian, which is, however, part of every obligation program. (Balzac, Proust and Twain belonged to the guests.)

I hope the Burano Lace tradition will not disappear... | freddie18 Fri Apr 24, 2009 02:28 UTC I find your Venice page very detailed and well-written. I will definitely be using your tips on my next trip to Italy. Murano glass is attractive and expensive but no matter what the cost, I have to buy a couple coz I guess it is worth the price. | joiwatani Sat Apr 18, 2009 13:12 UTC The posting of your pictures are definitely different!
