City of Romeo and Juliet

by csordila - last update: May 28, 2009

Piazza delle Erbe
It's me on the Piazza delle Erbe.
It used to be the Roman Forum but now its a wonderful open air market surrounded by historic buildings with frescos and peppered with sculptures. Go there for a cheap meal.
Ponte Pietra

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Verona is surrounded by medieval buildings and beautiful architecture. Living is pleasant and besides Juliet's residence, not crowded at all.
The Piazza dei Signoria with its historical buildings joined with elegant arches was the center of city's political life.
The Old Castle Castelvecchio and the 2000 year old Arena di Verona where annual opera concerts are held, are two major sights to see.
Near the Arena are rows of cafes and restaurants to rest your feet but walk a little bit more to the back streets for the same quality and atmosphere cafes for half the price.

Portoni della Bra leads into the historic core

The second largest city in the Veneto region

Verona, is one of Italy's most alluring cities, the second largest city in the Veneto region (after Venice), boasts many splendid Roman ruins, second only to those of Rome itself. Its magnificent palazzi of rosso di Verona built by the city's medieval rulers and the most ornate Romanesque church in northern Italy attracts hordes of tourists whole year around.

And you cannot go to Verona without stumbling over supposed artifacts of Shakespeare's tragic story of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capuleti. Yet, Verona is more than just the place of a teenager romance gone very wrong.

Laszlo, lovely little page about Verona here. I only visited the city briefly during the 1st VT Euromeet in Italy back in 2005.

Castelvecchio is among our favourite museums, maybe if only as the "cure" for the "Juliet's house". We consider Equestrian Monument of Cangrande I Della Scala to be one of the greatest sculptures ever.

Glad you enjoyed your visit to Verona. I had a great time there a couple years ago, when I saw three operas in the Arena (Aida, Carmen and Madama Butterfly) and had a free bicycle from my hotel.
