Chalkidiki is the large peninsula in northern Greece and located between the Thermaikos and Strymonikos Gulfs. The peninsula ends in three smaller peninsulas; Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos.
Busy and romantic seacoasts, crystal clear water, green forests and picturesque valleys lieing among them.
Abundant olive tree plantations, golden yellow tillages, Byzantine churches.

Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos

But Chalkidiki offers more than sun, sea and beach. Chalkidiki is full of entertainment, festivals and cultural events. There are 20 archaeological sites, historical sites such as Stagira (where Aristotle was born) and the caves of Petralona which were inhabited about 700.000 years ago.
The peninsula ends in three smaller peninsulas; Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos. Kassandra, named after Cassandros, king of Macedonia, was a good choice for me who prefer lively destinations with a lot of life, entertainment and many things to do. A channel separates Kassandra from the peninsula Chalkidiki, it is an island in this manner.
According to Greek mythology, this is the spot where a huge battle took place between the Olympian gods and Gigantes.

The beaches of Chalkidiki

The beaches of Chalkidiki are famous worldwide. There are no rivers here, which is said to be why the sea is so blue and clean and have the reputation of being the best beaches of Greece, reminding tropical beaches with their crystal-clear blue or turquoise waters and long fine sandy beaches.
The best beaches of Chalkidiki are in the peninsula of Mont Athos. Unfortunately, since it is belonging to the monastic state, the beaches are not for tourists, however, Kassandra and Sithonia also have amazing pure white sandy beaches.
At the beaches you can enjoy your coffee, and the very fresh fish and also the ouzo titbits offered at the fish-houses. In the sea the waterdepths with water temperatures of up to 25C are ideal for childrens.

Chalkidiki is obviously an excellent choice for a relaxing holiday. Sunny golden beaches, deep and picturesque gulfs, traditional villages and modern tourist resorts, small islands and sheltered bays, rich history, competitive cultural heritage, and warm people, Mediterranean climate and magnificent natural beauty, this is today's Chalkidiki.

Interesting & informative page, Lazlo. I have a book about Mt Athos (From the Holy Mountain) and have always been interested in this area. Your photos are great.
