"The city with the most natural landscape" Rio de Janeiro by csordila
Rio de Janeiro Travel Guide: 3,628 reviews and 6,543 photos
I have read more about Brazil than about any other country.
And my dreams came true....
Of course it is crowded with many tourists, but, nothing has prepared you for the view you will witness. Stand with the statue at your back, and to your left is Maracana and the northern districts. Straight ahead in the distance is Niteroi with its snaky bridge and Rio's other must see, the hump of the Sugar Loaf. To the right is the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in the foreground, and Copacabana and Ipanema beaches further out.
Rio de Janeiro - Cidade Maravilhosa has got its name on January(Janeiro) 1, 1502 from Portuguese navigators who mistook the entrance of Guanabara Bay for the mouth of a river. In 1562 the Portuguese King established the city.
From 1763 till 1960 Rio was the capital of Brazil.
After the transfer of Capital Federal Brasilia in 1960, it was transformed into a city-state with the name of Guanabara. On March 15, 1975 were merged with the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Population: 6,161,047 (IBGE, 2008), area: 1182.292 kilometers², population density: 5212.4 /km².

Great information and fantastic photos on Rio de Janeiro
Marg
Laszlo, thanks for visiting my Acapulco pages. I in turn have always wanted to go to Rio. Ah, to be able to go whenever, where ever, would be like heaven. Stay strong, my friend and you will be amazed at what is there for you to see. :-)
Thanks for your interesting travel story and great pictures, Laszlo!~
Rio de Janeiro is on my wish list and I would very much like to see the views from Corcovado and Sugar Loaf. The view looks stunning!
That statue of Christ head is huge. It looks like you guys all enjoyed the trip, as the "wild bunch"
What a fantastic place. Thank you for such wonderful historic info about The Christ the Redeemer. It would be fanscinating to see the carnival and all the neat costumes, but the noise would be too much for me too. Excellent page L!
It was, obviously, the dream travel. Hope we'll see Rio, at least once in a lifetime.
Beautiful Rio de Janeiro's tips! Hoping to visit that place someday! Maybe when the kids are all grown up!
Amazing they played a Hungarian song at the Plataforma...entertaining Rio pages you have..Norman :)
Excellent tips on this fascinating place. Seems like so much to do & see such as the tropical island schooner cruise, the beaches and more. Great shopping tip too for the gems!
