Luxor: Archaeological Treasure on the Nile

by MikeBird - last update: Jul 12, 2008

So much to see and do

The hotel from the swimming pool boat
The East bank of the Nile - where most tourists and locals stay has a wide variety of tourist accommodation. Our Hotel had a Nile front. It was near to the town centre and had a bank with ATM next door. Its swimming pool was on a floating barge actually on the River. There was a small garden and terracing.
We enjoyed our brief stay there.
Entering Karnak Temple

Karnak

Unmissable but you'll have to join the crowds if you go between 10 am and 3pm.
Entrance to Valley of the Kings

Thebes - Valley of the Kings

Thebes is on the West bank where the sun sets and the Kings and Queens were laid to rest. There are loads of little ferries to carry you across the River.
Once across you will quickly be approached with offers of a guide and vehicle. Our taxi driver took us round all the main sites but because he wasn't an official guide he dropped us off at the entrance a little way out of the main gates. That didn't matter though. We managed to buy our tickets each time without trouble.

Again - we had to join the queues but we didn't regret it. We went in April around Easter time .

Go prepared for a hot, dry day. Decide which tombs you want to visit - your ticket allows you to go into three. You have to pay extra for the tombs of Rameses VI - which is truly magnificent and Tutankhamun which some say is a little disappointing.

See my tips for more details.

We were fortunate to visit Medinat Habu before going to the Valley of the Kings, and then did Karnak in the evening. Next morning we went to temple of Luxor and I wheedled with my husband to return to Karnak by day- we found it hard to leave.
