"So beautiful!" North Keppel Island by MariePisces
North Keppel Island Travel Guide: 2 reviews and 7 photos
North Keppel Island is a private island, it's flora and fauna are preserved so they don't get destroyed. Humans cannot just turn up, they take small groups for various, usually educational purposes.
Very few people actually live on the island, about 10 staff at one time plus a group of around 20. It is entirely self sufficient from the composting toilets to the wind turbine on the hills.
Since it is a research/educational centre there are science facilities.
The views from the hills are absolutely spectacular, since the island is so small you can see the great barrier reef all around you.
The island has a few rolling hills, marshes and a lot of coconut trees. You are even free to eat the coconuts, if you can open them ;)
There is snorkelling avaliable, although closer to the shore the coral has faded and isn't in the best health.
The centre provides a games room and 1 television in the dining area. There are electricity points. The food is surprisingly good but there are NO restaurants, NO shops, so what is served or grown there is all you can get.
Mobile reception does work though is poor at times.
The beaches are tropical and they are easily accessible. The rolling green hills are fun to hike though and the views from it are amazing. Well worth a visit! Since there are no cars and no other people living there it feels so peaceful and you can relax so much.
- Pros:beautiful, coconuts, wild, no civilisation, further out the coral is so good
- Cons:can be very windy, no shops
- In a nutshell:Beautiful and peaceful, great experience of the edge of the reef
