I've transferred many times at the Takasaki train station but usually didn't go out from the train station. One of the major sights in Takasaki is the Kannon statue, Goddess of Mercy. The statue can be seen from the train as it's approaching the Takasaki Station, high above the hill.

If you're like me who enjoy visiting places of worship, then the Kannon statue (some 40+ meter high) is worth a visit... more travel advice
