"Land of fire" Surabaya by ashafruddin

Surabaya is the nearest big city before your launch to beautiful Tengger mountains. You may want to stay overnight at Cemoro Lawang to get a short nap or just take a night drive from Surabaya and try to sleep in the vehicle. To see the sunrise expect to wake up at around 03:30hr, take a jeep ride for 45 minutes or so to the highest point at Mount Penanjakan. As it will be cold bring along a jacket.

A town of Porong east of Surabaya was partly buried in volcanic mud flow when a local company drilled for gas in the populated area. Seven villages were destroyed and thousands made homeless. Not easy to get into this place without local guide as the roads were strewn with private toll barricades.
