Banff is the gateway to the National Park of the same name, holding some of Canada's most beautiful natural jewels. The town itself is fairly small and touristy. There are a ton of places to eat and shop, similar to any resort town. Realistically, because of the restrictions placed on development due to the fact that Banff is entirely within the boundaries of the National Park, you will quickly run out of things to do until you go and explore the great outdoors. This is the REAL reason to come to Banff. With spectacular mountains, glaciers and moraine lakes, you will have scenery like few other places. You would come to Banff in winter to enjoy the skiing and at other times of year to revel in the grandeur of its magnificent surroundings. The hiking around Banff is wonderful! Of course if you don't want to go hiking, you could also just sit in the hot springs and relax.

Enjoyed reading about your experiences in Banff, trully one of Canada's most beautiful towns. Touristy! Yes, but just look at those mountain views as you walk along the main street.

I often wondered if you found out the type of Owl. Glad "traveldave" knew the answer for you!

The owl is called a Northern Hawk-Owl, regularly seen during daylight hours in northern boreal forests. Banff looks like a beautiful area, a nice place to visit.
