I visited Halifax at the beginning and end of a tour that focused mainly on hiking in Cape Breton Island. Halifax itself doesn't have the fame or attractions that places like Montreal or Vancouver or Toronto have, don't let that stop you from visiting. There is a real nice, laid back feel to the place. From my arrival to the last day of my trip, everyone I met was very nice, very welcoming. People paused to talk to you and were genuinely nice. When you hear people raving about the Canadian Maritimes you will hear them talk about the lovely setting, the warmth of the people. They aren't joking! If you are coming from a large city you will notice the more relaxed pace of life here right away.
Halifax is the capital of the Province of Nova Scotia (New Scotland), the largest city in the Canadian Maritimes and a major economic center. As you are driving in from the airport you cannot fail to notice it is a major port city and also there is a large military presence.
Halifax metropolitan area, which is called Halifax Regional Municipality, has a population of 390,000 and incorporates about 200 communities of various sizes into one common unit.

After visiting Peggy's Cove we headed to Halifax. Our GPS brought us to the downtown area which had so many one-way streets and we couldn't find any parking, so, frustrated, we headed out and left Halifax. Don't think we missed much.
So glad you enjoyed Halifax!
I've not been to this part of Canada - the Maritimes - but I would love to. The hills downtown remind me of Seattle!
