Zilina Travel Guide: 21 reviews and 80 photos
Zilina is one of the largest cities in Slovakia and a main transport hub to the rest of Slovakia as well as Poland and the neighboring Czech Republic. Historically it had an important location in protecting the trade routes and hence you will find several important castles not too far away.
Zilina is generally a mainly industrial city of little interest to the tourist. Because of its location it is a good base for exploring Slovakia. The nearest large cities are Bratislava (120 miles) and Trencin (50 miles). From Zilina you can easily get to the Mala Fatra and if you want to go south you will go through some great country to the traditional areas of Cicmany and Rajecka Lesna. There are also good transportation links to the Czech Republic. Getting to Poland, though its not far, on public transport will be a bit more difficult though. Finally, it is located on the main east-west highway, so access to the High Tatras from here is excellent.
Also nearby is some of the best hiking in a country which boasts tons of great places to hike. Hiking in the Mala Fatra was excellent, not as crowded as in the High Tatras, fantastic scenery and challenging hikes.
Quite recently the Korean car maker Kia set up a large plant just outside of the city. It currently makes more than 300,000 cars a year (2009) and is the largest employer in town.

Cool tips and location.....I hope to get here sometime.... :)
Thanks for the tour Val! I wasn't in this part of Slovakia, on the other side of the Tatras.
Not the greatest hotel eh! Sheep's cheese sounds interesting.
I had a read and it is a good review. I will have to try sheeps cheese one day.
not really like feta, i found it dryer
Hummm, sounds good!
Good tips - I like hotel tips like this, there aren´t too many good hotel tips on VT so I always go to Tripadvisor for hotel tips.
Thanks for your story, Val! ><><><><><><><
