Essential day trip from Madrid

Perhaps one of the easiest, and in my opinion, the most essential, daytrips from Madrid would be a visit to San Lorenzo del Escorial. From Madrid it is 48 km (30 miles) and 52 k (32 miles) from Segovia. Though it is only an hour from Madrid it feels so much farther, especially in autumn when you can enjoy the colors of the trees changing. Spaniards love to escape to the hills around this area just to get away from the city

Two important sights to see

San Lorenzo has two important sights to see.

El Escorial is the massive library/cathedral/mausoleum built by Phillip II, the second Habsburg king of Spain. It has a magnificent collection of art and its priceless library.

Valle de los Caidos was initially built by the Franco dictatorship to honor the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War, eventually it was to honor the fallen in that war.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:lovely setting, the Library!
  • Cons:no photos allowed at Escorial
