We approached Heathrow airport at approx. 5am, so our first view of London was a mass of lights. By the time we got out of the airport with our relatives it was light.
We were staying with my husband's aunt & uncle in Aylesbury, so off we went. Our first meal was a massive English breakfast followed by a walk up town.
Aylesbury is a lovely town, a bit like our home town so we felt very relaxed.
We were shown the historic parts of Aylesbury, The Kings Head Tavern, where Oliver Cromwell did something. Sorry, I can't remember what he did, but apparently he did it there. We also saw some of those old typical English houses, the type you see in the books all the time.
Aylesbury was to be our base for touring Southern England, but first we were off to Liverpool.
Driving to Liverpool was exciting, we saw names of different places that we had seen in books, or in movies or even in nursery rhymes. Banbury, as in Banbury Cross, Silverstone Raceway, we were like kids in a lolly shop.
We arrived in Liverpool to meet my husbands family & had a wonderful family get together.
The next day we were taken to the Albert Dock by the Mersey River. Unfortunately our hosts were slow to rise after a big night so we didn't have much time there, but what we saw was wonderful.
Our base in Liverpool was Lydiate, near Maghull, which is north of the city. While here we were able to walk to the oldest Inn in Lancashire, The Scotch Piper Inn, built in 1320. We had refreshments while there & were allowed to pull our own beer.
The remainder of our stay was spent visiting old family homes & areas where my husband lived, but we got to see the real Liverpool & its people. The public transport system in Liverpool was wonderful, we were amazed at how easy it was to get around by bus & train, something our part of Australia lacks.
