It is the second largest city in Slovakia.
Kosice has the largest preserved urban area in the country.
It also has Slovakia’s most beautiful cathedral in whole Slovakia.
Bratislava has not this type of cathedral.
In Kosice the cathedral of st. Elizabeth is 800 years old building, it was built in old gothic style like Notre Dame in Paris. If you go more to the East, then you will not find more churches of this West - old gothic style !!!
Under the Soviets, Kosice became a steel town. US Steel bought the Kosice plant in 2000 and today is one of Slovakia’s largest employers (16,000 employees).
The church had been in the small village Kozuchovce, today it stays in Museum´s area in the centre of Kosice.
Slovakia has the highest density of wooden churches anywhere in Europe. In 1681, the Roman Catholic Austro-Hungarian Emperor dictated that only Roman Catholic churches could use hard materials (stone, metal). Protestant and Ruthenian/Rusyn Greek Catholic churches could only be made of wood and were not allowed to use nails in their construction.

They had to be erected within one year, start to finish, and were not permitted in the center of town.
